Daniela Martin is a science communicator, media producer and social researcher with over 15 years of experience across strategic communication, public engagement, and social and cultural management. She is the Director of Communications at the Institute for Methods Innovation (IMI), where she leads research communication across the organization and its affiliated initiatives, and oversees communication activities for major funded research projects. In this role, she translates complex research into accessible formats through digital content and supports stakeholder engagement through participatory approaches, such as co-creation workshops. Daniela has worked internationally with governments, universities and organizations, including UNESCO, UN‑Habitat, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) , the Dana Foundation and LucasFilm, applying research‑informed communication to connect scientific knowledge with public and policy audiences.
Daniela has designed and delivered training workshops and courses on research impact, science communication, and public and policy engagement. She has provided training in both English and Spanish, supporting researchers, students and professionals in developing practical skills in evidence‑based communication, impact planning, inclusive stakeholder engagement and participatory approaches. Her training work draws on experience across universities, international research consortia, and policy‑focused initiatives, and includes the development of online courses and learning resources delivered through learning management systems.Â
Daniela has also held academic teaching roles in Mexico and Germany, delivering courses on public engagement, media production, discourse analysis and science communication. In her role as a professor in Mexico, she led multidisciplinary student projects in which participants from fields such as communication, graphic design, education, psychology and engineering applied science communication skills in real-world, community-based settings, including work with cultural institutions, underserved communities and public health initiatives. Her training approach emphasizes clarity, inclusivity and cultural sensitivity, grounded in social research practice.
Daniela has contributed to more than a dozen major funded research and innovation projects, including Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe initiatives with budgets ranging from €1 million to €16 million. Her work focuses on communication for impact, dissemination planning, stakeholder engagement, and the creative use of digital and emerging tools to support public and policy engagement.
Key projects include AURORA (Achieving a new European Energy Awareness), HYPOP (Hydrogen Public Opinion and Acceptance), NUCLEUS (New Understanding of Communication, Learning and Engagement in Universities and Scientific Institutions), RRING (Responsible Research and Innovation Networking Globally), and Project Ô. Across these projects, Daniela has led or supported communication strategy, digital content production, media relations and participatory engagement activities.
Daniela has published academic work on science communication, discourse and public engagement in international peer‑reviewed journals and edited volumes. Her publications include articles in outlets such as the Journal of Science Communication and Open Research Europe, as well as book chapters on science communication in Latin America. She has also co‑authored professional and policy‑oriented reports for international organizations and EU‑funded research projects. Her master’s thesis on the symbolic construction of the future in scientific and technological discourse was published as a monograph by an academic press.
